1999 Mazda Bongo Friendee RF-V Auto Free Top – Grade 4 – Coming Soon
It looks like a van.
Then you press a button and the roof opens into a second floor.
Coming soon to The JDM Pit is one of Japan’s coolest answers to the traditional camper van: the 1999 Mazda Bongo Friendee RF-V Auto Free Top.
This Japanese-market Bongo has 117,386 kilometers (approximately 72,940 miles) and carries a Grade 4 Japanese auction rating. Finished in its original White, it is powered by a 2.5L gasoline engine paired with an automatic transmission and 2WD.
But the engine isn't really the story here.
The roof is.
The Auto Free Top
At first glance, the Bongo Friendee looks like a uniquely styled Japanese passenger van from the 1990s.
Park it, activate the Auto Free Top, and the roof raises to create an elevated sleeping area above the passenger compartment.
Suddenly, your van has an upstairs.
And unlike a simple aftermarket rooftop tent, Mazda engineered the Auto Free Top into the vehicle itself. It was part of the Friendee's original design and helped turn an everyday Japanese van into a compact factory-built adventure vehicle.
Even better, the Auto Free Top on this example has been tested and is functioning properly.

Why the Bongo Friendee?
Japan has produced some wonderfully unconventional vehicles, but the Bongo Friendee occupies a category almost entirely its own.
Mazda took a practical passenger van and asked a very Japanese question:
What if the roof became another room?
The result was the Auto Free Top.
Rather than requiring a large traditional camper or a permanently raised roof, the Bongo could retain the proportions and usability of a normal van. When it was time to travel, camp, or simply spend the night somewhere interesting, the roof transformed the vehicle.
That's what makes these so much fun today.
It's part minivan, part camper, part 1990s Japanese engineering experiment—and completely different from almost anything that was available in the United States when it was new.
This particular example makes an especially interesting starting point for someone who wants a weekend adventure van, road-trip vehicle, camping setup, or simply one of the more unusual JDM vehicles you can bring to Cars & Coffee.
And when someone inevitably asks:
“What is that thing?”
Just open the roof.
This Bongo Friendee was carefully sourced through the Japanese auction system and meets our quality standards. We purchase Grade 4 to 4.5 condition vehicles only. In the Japanese auction system, Grade 5 represents near-new condition, while Grade 4 reflects a clean, well-maintained vehicle with normal wear consistent with age.
Financing and nationwide shipping are available.
Walkaround and test drive videos will be available on YouTube at The JDM Pit once the vehicle arrives. Personal walkaround videos will also be available upon request.
